As a conservative I live in the shadow. Some of my earliest memories are of the 1996 election; I recognized the shadow even then. I was not like most children; I preferred the news to cartoons. Yet I felt as though I was not getting the truth from the news that I watched. I grew up with Dan Rather and Tom Brokaw, yet I questioned their intentions. Then in 2004 Dan Rather was caught using forged documents, all for the sake of ousting President Bush from office. What trust was left, quickly disappeared. As a student I stumbled upon the teachings of John Locke. He argued that we, as individuals, should reason after truth and not just accept the things we have been told by those in authority.
I continue to live in the shadow, as a college student I feel the shadow from my teachers. As an avid news reader, I feel the shadow. As a conservative I feel the dark cold shadow being cast down from Washington. I now reason my way to truth, and find that my opinions mostly fall in line with conservative ideology. My purpose is not to convert anyone to what I think, but if I cause you to think for yourself why you believe what you believe, then I will feel as though I accomplished my purpose.
